Peyto Lake

Region: Rockies · Updated

A wolf-head-shaped turquoise lake seen from a lookout off the Icefields Parkway.

About Peyto Lake

From a short paved path near Bow Summit, Peyto Lake spreads out below in a brilliant turquoise. The colour comes from glacial rock flour washing in from the Peyto Glacier. It's one of the most photographed views in the Rockies.

A brief history

The lake is named after Ebenezer William "Bill" Peyto, a famous Banff outfitter, guide and early park warden.

RV tips

  • Parking is limited and busy in summer. Larger rigs may need to wait or use overflow areas if open.
  • At about 1,860 m, snow can linger on the path into June.
  • There are no services. Fuel up before driving the Parkway.

Before you go: Hours, road conditions, campground availability, passes and fire bans change. Check the official source below, 511 Alberta and Alberta Fire Bans before you travel. National parks need a Parks Canada pass, and Kananaskis needs a Conservation Pass.
